Shenise Gilyard is a physician and radiology resident who hopes to serve God and people through her work.

Shenise talks about her story of overcoming obstacles and barriers in her journey to becoming a physician. From patients unassumingly asking her to clear their food tray to hospital staff seconding guessing her position as a Black woman physician, Shenise reminds us to lean into what God has called us to do.

She shares what the Lord has put on her heart: “It’s OK to exist in this space. I know I’m qualified and God called me to do this despite what others may say. In overcoming the challenge and exhaustion, I remind myself that God called me here to do this.”

With that encouragement in her heart, she has become the first African American Chief Resident in Emory University Hospital’s history, serving alongside two other women.

When we asked Shenise about her favorite Bible verse, she said that she doesn’t have a favorite, but relies on different verses for different times. During our interview she mentioned, Psalm 119:11 , “ You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.”
